The network equivalencing is somehow a trial and error process in order to achieve your desired network equivalent. If the total loads become lesser as compared to the original, that means some portion of the system were "netted" on an island that is no longer connected to the resulting equivalent. Another scenario is that the load and generation is cancelled out but their connection is still present in the reduced network. The question if that is acceptable depends on your objective.
