I have the same issue on my company PC. I heard from some other colleagues that there is a key in the registry that if you delete it, things go smoother. I decided not to risk it.

One thing to note, even you hide the annotations, there are still there and if you process the annotations via Python, e.g., get the map strings, etc., you will get them. Unexpected but understandable.
