Procedure to island a network

Hi guys,

If I have a big system and I want to island just a sub-set of it, what could be the best practice to do it? I started to pick a new swing bus for the island and put out-of-service some branches and buses.

It is better to first take lines out of service until an island is formed. Check with activity TREE. After that, set a swing bus in the island.

Hi! What I did was: 1) I set a another swing bus for the island network. Thus I got two swing buses (one for the new island). 2) I adjusted the dispatch in order to get those lines with zero power flow. 3) I put those lines out of service. Thanks for your advice!

There is no need for balancing the flow. Point 2 is not needed.

Hi! I tried to do it without adjusting zero flow on the lines but it didn't work, it blew up. I wonder if I did something wrong, but after that I could get my island. Thanks for your help.

I assume the mismatch became too high for Newton/Raphson to solve, so you did it right in your case.
