I have tried varying the fault impedance progressively with each time step, but I dont get an even response.

You need to change the fault impedence each time as per your requirements as get the desired bus voltage.

Eg: I was recently working on a project which needed that the bus voltage drop to 50% during the fault. Changing the impedance from -2e+009 to -1+002 did the trick. It initially took me time to adjust the impedance, but I guess that's the only way round, to be patient!!!!
