Hi, are there any method to find optimal size and location (s) of FACTS in PSSE? and how we can do that?

One of the uses of FACT devices (SVC, Statcom,...) is to provide dynamic reactive support (also known as voltage control support) for dynamic studies where [US NERC] contingencies type B or C cause voltage collapse or to comply with reliability standards on reactive/voltage performance.
For voltage collapse scenarios, the 'best' location can be found by modal analysis of a voltage stability study at the voltage collapse transfer level for the worst contingency. VSAT has such tool. The 'best' size is confirmed with transient stability studies searching for the amount of MVARS that would resolve the voltage collapse for the worst contingency. The study case would be a future case (to allow for FACT construction time) and the final size could include a margin for X years beyond the future case studied.

@jconto, I totally agree with your comment, thanks for the great conclusion. I just have this kind of experience for the 'size' recently, it makes sense that the 'location' is determined by voltage sag, although never had the 'location' experience.

plz can u help me to that. the method is very well and sound really logic. but in practice i found many difficulties

can you describe your practical difficulties in performing FACTs studies? what tools are available? what is the problem you want to resolve?

Thanks, what we mean by "VSAT"? it is inside PSSE? Thanks again.

VSAT, Voltage Stability Assessment Tool, is another (& better) tool rivaling the PV engine in PSSe.

Many thanks for your replay, but how i can do voltage collapse scenarios? And what is mean by "'location' is determined by voltage sag"? thanks

A voltage collapse study (or steady state voltage stability study) can be done using the PSSe PV engine (search for PV in this forum on some interesting questions or the PSSe manual). Typically in V-collapse scenarios, the network voltage decrease ('sag') at buses near the collapse point.

Can we use optimization method (s) to choose locations of FACTS by Python?

Towana gravatar imageTowana ( 2014-03-27 23:41:00 -0500 )edit

I am not aware of optimal method that include dynamic simulation in it. Most "optimal placement" papers are based on steady-state network models. If FACTs are needed because of dynamic (reactive) deficiencies, then the comparisons of studied cases have to be validated running dynamic studies.

My main point to use (with optimal location) of FACTS is to improve network voltage. the network that i am working on it have problem of voltages in may buses.
