Scenario manager replaced with study manager in PSSE 36

Where I work we're slowly emerging from the dark ages of PSSE 34 into the brave new world of 36, and I've learned that the "scenario manager" feature (ch27 of the PSSE 34 POM) has been scrapped and replaced with a new "study manager" feature instead (ch 29 of the PSSE 36 POM). I loved the old scenario manager which let you use an xml file to point to bookmarked favourite cases, SLDs, and scripts, it made life just a bit nicer! The GUI interface was prone to crashing a lot in 34 but was more stable in 35 and it was straightforward to edit the xml directly instead.
I spent a long time trying and have found the new study manager feature to be extremely buggy with issues including:
- Renaming variants just replaces them with empty files
- SLDs and RAW files can't be included - even work arounds using python API calls to load them seem to fail
- Switching between variants has 50% success rate of actually working at best.
Has anyone else had more luck than I have making good use of the new study manager feature? I've tried really hard to make it work because I want it work but it's fighting me every step of the way.
