I suggest you create a dummy bus connecting by a line with inexpressive reactance(0.001 or 0.005 pu) to the bus if you want to apply the fault. Then you apply the fault at the dummy bus. By doing this simple thing, you condition better the numerical problem, avoiding crashes.
